What We Believe
The first part of our statement of faith is based on the Nicene creed (with which we agree in full), these are merely our iterations of most of its parts:
We believe in one Triune God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. We believe that all are of the same essence, but different persons of the Godhead.
We believe that Jesus was begotten of God and not made.
We believe that Jesus is the Son of God. We believe in the incarnation, by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, of Jesus Christ as man who physically walked the earth.
We believe in the crucifixion of Jesus, which was accomplished to defeat sin once and for all, and that his body lay in a tomb until the third day.
We believe in Jesus’s resurrection, on which the truth of our faith rests, by the power of God, as had been made known through Scripture.
We believe that Jesus ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, as Lord, and giver of life, by whom the Prophets spoke. The seal of our salvation, the Holy Spirit, works in us to produce fruit of righteousness.
We believe that Jesus shall return in glory to bring true justice to the world, judging the living and dead. His judgement is fair and just.
We believe in the everlasting kingdom of God.
We believe in one holy global and apostolic Church.
We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in God’s new holy world to come. These things we await with great anticipation.
Furthermore:
We believe in a personal God. We believe that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit each have a personal relationship with us. Each person of God can be known personally and intimately.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Champion of humanity; God became human so that, through him, humanity can be reconciled with Himself, Jesus retained bodily form (although glorified) and remains ‘God with us’.
We believe in a Pursuing God. God is constantly pursuing us with a fierce love regardless of the quality of our relationship with him.
We believe in total dependence on God for true (eternal) life. We believe, by extension, that God both initiates and completes our salvation.
We believe that God and suffering can co-exist, but that God desires to renew and transform the suffering world by His grace.
We believe that saving faith is only found in Jesus Christ.
We believe that the Bible is both true and reliable, yet that responsible interpretation is necessary and vital to our faith - especially in a world where, historically, the Bible has been used to justify various atrocities and injustices.
We believe that God is infinitely complex and that our faith in and knowledge of God will always be limited this side of His eternal kingdom. Therefore, we believe in a faith (seeking understanding) that rejects simple answers to complex questions about God.
We reject any form of prosperity gospel. We do not believe that faith is synonymous with wealth, health and material prosperity. God’s chief aim is not to give us all that we desire for a comfortable life, but conversely, to invite us into His suffering world as instigators of reconciliation.
